Throughout the park, artisans will be demonstrating the various textile skills early Texans used for survival to make clothing and bedding and for decoration to make their house a “home”. In order to develop a better appreciation of these skills, visitors can observe as well as learn these skills through hands-on activities.

In conjunction with the demonstrations (quilting, spinning, weaving, rug hooking, and fancywork), the Brenham Friendship Quilters Guild will be hosting a Quilt Show in the Conference Center, artisans will be demonstrating in the Education Center, The Star of the Republic Museum will have displays and information on the extensive selection of textiles located throughout the museum, Barrington Living History Farm will be interpreting 1850s textile skills, and the Visitor Center will have various displays plus retail items for sale.

Raspberry Muffins with Lemon Glaze

The raspberries at the market have been so good. Why not try some yummy muffins for breakfast (or book a room at Wrigley House this week-end and I will bake them for you!):

Raspberry-Lemon Muffins
Ingredients:
2 cups
All-purpose flour
1 ½ tsp
Baking powder
½ tsp
Ground cinnamon
½ tsp
Salt
2
Large eggs
1 cup
Whole milk
2/3 cup
Canola or corn oil
1 1/3 cups
Firmly packed light brown sugar
2 tsp
Grated lemon zest
2 tbsp
Fresh lemon juice
1 tsp
Vanilla extract
¼ tsp
Almond extract
1 cup
Fresh or frozen raspberries
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease muffin tins
2. In a bowl stir together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt and set aside.
3. In large bowl, combine the eggs and milk and beat on low speed just until blended.
4. Add the oil, brown sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, vanilla and almond extract and beat just until blended.
5. Add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed just until moistened. Do not over mix. Fold in the raspberries with a rubber spatula
6. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling each to within ¼” of the rim.
7. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes if using fresh raspberries or 25-30 minutes if using frozen raspberries
8. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn our onto the rack
9. Serve warm or at room temperature with Honey Butter
10. Can store in an airtight container at room temperature for us to 3 days.
Yield: 1 dozen muffins

119th Brenham Maifest Celebration

The Brenham Maifest - one of the oldest spring German festivals in the South, will hold its 119th celebration on May 8-9, 2009 at Fireman's Park The Maifest is a community-wide festival celebrating local German heritage through the youth of the community in light of the joys of springtime.

Highlights of the Brenham Maifest include extravagant parades, elegant coronations, a children's carnival and culminates with the Maifestival. The "German Village" promotes the German Heritage of Brenham and Washington County.

The celebrations begin both days at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Brenham with a parade. The Maifestival is held Friday and Saturday at Fireman’s Park. Beginning Friday evening at 5:30 pm with music, a children's carnival, festival food and drinks. The Junior Coronation will be held Friday evening with young children participating in an elaborate outdoor ceremony, which provides entertainment and the presentation of the Junior King and Queen. On Saturday the Maifestival will begin at 11:00 am at Fireman's Park with German Village and Kinder Village activities, along with German Music, Arts & Crafts, and the Children's Carnival. The Senior Coronation will be held Saturday evening with former royalty and high school students providing entertainment for this outdoor event, the culmination of the Maifest Celebration is highlighted by the presentation of the Senior King and Queen.

Barrington Living Farm - Hands and Feet

Barrington Living Farm - Hands and Feet: a Musical Celebration will be held at Barrington Living History Farm, home of Dr. Anson Jones, last president of the Republic of Texas. It is located at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Site off Highway 105 on FM 1155 between Navasota and Brenham. The hours of operation for this event are Saturday and Sunday, May 2nd and 3rd starting at 10:00am and continuing until 4:30pm.

Come join us as we listen to the sounds of period music and dance along with period dances. Visitors can also try their hand at period instruments such as spoons, a washtub bass, and the washboard. Come learn the importance of music and how it affected the lives of the citizens of the 19th century.

Visitors may join our musicians by feeling the music in a variety of dances including the Virginia Reel or just by tapping your feet and clapping along. Also on hand are period instruments, where the young and old can form their own band and compose their own music. Come join us as we celebrate music and the impact it has not only today but over 150 years ago.

I have seen a few bluebonnets peaking through, and it will soon be time to drive the wonderful back roads of Washington County to enjoy all the wildflowers. Wrigley House has plenty of brochures with marked routes and will even pack a picnic lunch in antique picnic baskets for their guests to stop and enjoy the sights. Be sure to book early, or if you can get away, come mid-week when the rates are lower and the area isn't crowded!

La Bahia Lodge Is Open For Business!

La Bahia Lodge is the lastest addition to accommodations at Wrigley House. Formerly a 3 stall horse barn, the Lodge is newly constructed, but we used all the old barn wood to clad the baseboards, doors and windows and even to make the kitchen. The result is rustic but I think charming and I hope that you will think so too. Please have a look at the photos on my website and let me know what you think. The bedroom has a queen sized bed and in the living area are two twin sized day beds and one twin trundle for a total sleeping capacity of 5. There is a 150 year old Irish pine table with wheel back chairs that I brought from the UK when I moved back to the US, along with a wonderful 9' tall country cupboard purchased at Round Top Antiques Festival last October. I welcome you to La Bahia Lodge!
